The supremacy of Christ has been clearly demonstrated - fulness is found in Him. The false teaching has been confronted and shown to be ultimately empty. The way to true spiritual maturity is not along by following the path of legalism or mysticism. Rather it consists in an understanding and living on the basis of who we are in Christ. The final two chapters focus on the reality that because Christ is in us this has a profound impact on how we live. It is a case of out with the old and in with the new.
Message Points:
- A New Identity
- A New Wardrobe
- A New Community
Application & Response:
- Write down all the ‘identities’ you possess (nationality, job, relationships etc.). Honestly put them in the order that seem most important to you. Where does your identity in Christ sit in the list? Why is that, and how can it be made the highest priority?
- Which of the sins outlined in verses 5-9 are particular issues for you? What would putting them to death in your life look like in practice? Pray for the power of the Holy Spirt to begin to do this in the next week.
- “Christ is all and is in all.” How can we subtly continue to discriminate against other people in the church? What is the antidote to the discrimination we may still harbour in our hearts?
