'Paul The Prisoner’s Prayer'

Colossians 1:9-14

Last time we looked at Paul’s thanksgiving for the faith, love and hope that the Christians in Colossae were showing which was evidence of how they had received the true Gospel. Now Paul now turns to pray for them. It is because of what God has already done among them that Paul can pray with confidence for what God will do. His prayer is carefully shaped by his thanksgiving and it focuses around the three issues of knowledge, power and joy.

Message Points:

  1. He Prays That They Would Grow in the Knowledge of the Lord
  2. He Prays That They Would Know the Power of the Lord
  3. He Prays That They Would Experience The Joy of the Lord

Application & Response:

  1. Think of a Christian you consider to be truly wise. What is it about them, their understanding and way of thinking that you value? How could you grow more like them?

  2. Pick one of the countries highlighted in the Open Doors World Watch List for 2021. Read more about that country and the particular pressures for Christians there and take time to pray Paul’s prayer for the Colossians for the believers in this country. Pray that they would:
    • Grow in their knowledge of the Lord
    • Know the power of the Lord
    • Experience the joy of the Lord
Now pray the same for the church in Railway Street.

  3. “It’s one thing to be grateful. Its another to give thanks. Gratitude is what you feel. Thanksgiving is what you do.” (Tim Keller) How can you grow a sense of genuine gratitude in your heart? How can you improve the way you express your gratitude in thanksgiving?
