A special service was held in Railway Street Presbyterian Church last Sunday morning (21st March) to mark the 40th anniversary of Joe and Adeline McKibben’s appointment as caretakers. During the service, Dr Robin Coulter (Congregational Secretary) and his wife Margaret presented Joe and Adeline with gifts and flowers in recognition of their tireless work in keeping the church and precincts in pristine condition. In response, Joe recalled the day over 40 years ago when he arrived at Railway Street for his interview, “I was shaking then” he said, “and I’m still shaking today”. Joe went on to say, “Railway Street Church is the place to be - I love it”. The senior minister, the Very Rev Dr Howard Cromie, who was on Joe’s interview panel recalled that Joe had to sacrifice his much-loved pigeons when he took up the position as sexton and moved into the caretaker’s residence at Railway Street in March 1969.
Following the service, Joe and Adeline’s family, friends and members of the congregation packed the Church Hall for a reception held in their honour. Prior to enjoying a celebratory lunch, Joe and Adeline cut a commemorative cake bearing a photo of the happy couple.

Sorrow at Sudden Passing of Founding Trefoil Guild Member

(compiled largely from an article in the Ulster Star on Friday 12th March)
Iris LevettJust a week after celebrating 100 years of the Girl Guides, one of the most senior members of the South Antrim Trefoil Guild passed away suddenly this week. Iris Levett, who had been one of the founding members of the South Antrim Trefoil Guild, had been a guest at a special service held recently at Christ Church to celebrate the anniversary and helped to cut a special cake to mark the occasion. She then travelled to London with her sister for a family event before returning to Lisburn on Monday (March 8), only to discover her home had been broken into. She spent the night nearby with family but was taken to hospital with chest pains and died suddenly the following day (Tuesday 9). Doctors have said they do not believe her death was a result of the shock of the break in to her house. Mrs Levett’s only daughter Carole said her mother, who would have been 85 on Mother’s Day, had led a busy fulfilled life. Please click here to read more.

Laura Macdonnell’s Gap Year Outreach In New Zealand

Laura MacDonnell Laura MacDonnell, a former Friends’ School pupil, has spent the last six months of a gap year working with Crown Jesus Ministries. The final part of her gap year continued on Wednesday 24th February when she travelled to Oxford, New Zealand where she will be based at YWAM’s (Youth With A Mission) Discipleship Training School. Laura will spend the first 3 months at the base where, during the lecture phase, she will hear international speakers cover topics relating to the Christian faith and more particularly to missionary work. For her last 3 months, the outreach phase, Laura will be part of a school team when she will be involved in outreach work in South America, Far East Asia, South East Asia, Africa or Europe.
Laura, who is thankful for all the help, support and encouragement she has received over the past months says, “I’m taking this gap year before University to seek God’s will for my future. When praying about what to do with my gap year, God told me to ‘Go and make disciples of all nations’ so that is what I have been trying to do - first through working with Crown Jesus ministries and exploring mission opportunities at home and now with this Discipleship Training School (DTS) worldwide”. Laura concludes, “Oxford is a small rural town with 1400 inhabitants and about 4 times that number in sheep; both the ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Chronicles of Narnia’ movies were filmed in this region which is about 2½ hours from Christchurch on the south island”.

Former Lisburn Mayor is Guest Speaker at Railway Street Presbyterian

Councillor Ronnie Crawford was the guest speaker at morning worship in Railway Street Presbyterian Church last Sunday (14th Feburary 2010). In keeping with the church’s mission statement, ‘Following Christ - Serving the Community’, the former Lisburn Mayor spoke on the subject ‘Lisburn as I see it’. Thanking the minister, the Rev Brian Gibson for his invitation, he said that he was pleased to take part in the service, one of a number of events to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the congregation. Councillor Crawford spoke of the modern facilities in our thriving city and went on to give some of the city’s downside statistics, which include the highest rates of domestic violence and suicide in Northern Ireland. Speaking of how people set God aside in this ‘want everything - want it now’ culture, he concluded by emphasising the need to fear God and keep His commandments.
In a challenging sermon, the Rev Brian Gibson, spoke on the theme, ‘Serving the Community - in Lisburn’. Mr Gibson spoke of the need to build Christ’s kingdom on earth by showing compassion for people in all walks of life in our community. The aptly chosen closing hymn was, ‘Filled with Compassion’ which speaks of the need to be stirred to action and be filled with passion for all the people who live on the earth.
During the service, little Max Robbie Henderson, infant son of Michael and Laura Henderson, was baptised. Prior to the baptism, Laura's mother, June Martin, read the Scripture lesson.

A Place Of Peace On Earth At Christmas

Under the title of ‘A place of peace on earth at Christmas’ seven local churches have come together and thanks to a generous offer of premises, a prayer space has been created during the Christmas shopping period at 41 Market Square, Lisburn. This is an initiative in partnership with some of the city centre churches and will operate from Friday 4th December until Christmas Eve from 10.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Saturday, with late nights Thursday 10th and 17th December.

Making final preparations for the city centre prayer space, which opens today (Friday 4th December) at 41 Market Square, Lisburn are Lisburn City Centre Ministers L to R: Fr Dermot McCaughan, PP (St Patrick’s Church), Pastor George Hilary (Lisburn Christian Fellowship), Rev Brian Gibson (Railway Street Presbyterian Church), Rev John Brackenridge (First Lisburn Presbyterian Church), Rev Paul Dundas (Christ Church), Canon Sam Wright (Lisburn Cathedral) and Rev Brian Anderson (Seymour Street Methodist Church).

The idea is twofold - firstly to create and oasis of tranquillity during the hectic season and secondly to help people remember that the birth of Jesus is the real reason for the season. Members from the seven participating churches will man the space and trained and sensitive people will be available to pray with anyone who asks. It will be launched on Friday 4th December at 10.00am with a short act of Worship.
An opportunity not to be missed to serve our community! We are looking for volunteers to ‘man’ the premises. Activities that you can get involved include serving cups of tea and coffee, being part of a prayer team and more. Please contact Brian Gibson for more details.

Christmas is a Time for Giving -
Railway Street Christmas Appeal & Outreach!

Foodbags to be donated on either Sundays, 6th or 13th December 2009
This year we will be again supporting Social Services with our Christmas Food Bag Outreach. You will remember from previous years that we asked you to provide a sturdy shopping bag of groceries, non-perishable, along with a few treats etc suitable for Christmas. We had a great response from you all last year with over 80 food bags gratefully received by Social Services, and they are looking forward to our support again this year - it would be great to exceed last years' effort for our neighbours, especially in this time of financial hardship and unemployment for many. We would need to have all the donations in by Sunday 13th December and suggest that the bags are brought to Church on the 6th & 13th December.
In addition we are also hoping to put together a food hamper to present to The Simon Community an organisation doing excellent work, in difficult circumstances with the under privileged and homeless in our city. Contact has been made with the leaders of The Simon Community and our support would be of great value to them at Christmas time. Items could be brought along with the Social Service Food Bags to allow us to put together an appropriate hamper for The Simon Community. Similar items to those for the Food Bags would be ideal. We look forward to your support and thank you for your generosity. For further details, please contact Ian Wales.
